To Track or Not To Track Calories and Macros? [Free Download]

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better,
promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”
1 Timothy 4:8 NLT

To track or not to track? With that simple question, I've already hit a nerve with you, haven't I?

Maybe you diligently track every bite, calorie, and macro that goes in your mouth. Or maybe you vehemently oppose tracking anything you eat ever.

I can actually relate to both ideas.

In this episode of LiveFREE TV, we'll be talking about the very real issue so many women deal with -  whether we should track our calories and macros or not. I'm going to share what God has been teaching me recently about this area and I pray it helps you in a BIG way!

Weight Loss Tip #1: The Benefit of Tracking Calories and Macros

Of course, there is a benefit to tracking calories and macros and that is to be aware of what is going in your mouth. So many of us really have no idea how much we are consuming because we eat mindlessly. A bite here, a nibble there. And all those things add up.

So tracking can be beneficial to know if we are eating too much or in many cases, not enough for our bodies.

To my fellow calorie and macro trackers: The problem arises when we can't go through our day without tracking for fear we will mess up or eat outside our "allotted" amount of calories or macros.  We tend to lean toward obsession with our food and body, and when that happens we respond in one of two ways:

  1. We beat ourselves up in our minds with harsh, ugly words that we wouldn't say to even our worst enemy and/or beat ourselves up in the gym as penance to "right or wrong" of not tracking and instead overeating.
  2. We quit altogether and believe we are a failure so why even try. Our "all or nothing" perfectionistic way of living in this area sets up for believing we are only as good as our ability to keep this area in line.

To my fellow calorie and macro non-trackers: The problem for us is that we have NO idea how much we are eating. We tend to be more of a free-spirit and the idea of tracking every single bite makes us crazy!  Besides, it's too much work to do that with every bite we put in our mouth. We tend to lean toward neglecting the importance of what we eat and our health and when that happens we respond in one of two ways:

  1. We compare ourselves to our sister who seems to have it altogether in this area and we feel defeated.
  2. We convince ourselves that's is too hard, too much work, and not necessary because is it really that important?

There is a benefit to tracking, but we have to stop looking horizontally for the answer to whether it's for us or not and begin to look vertically to the one who created us!

Weight Loss Tip #2: How To Track Calories and Macros Without Becoming A Slave To It

Since I have been on both sides of this topic, and because I'm on this journey to freedom from food obsession and disordered eating, I've talked to the Lord about this quite a bit. The questions that have continued to come up in my conversations with Him are:

  • Is tracking necessary?
  • Is it beneficial?
  • If it is, how can it be incorporated into life without becoming an obsession and a measuring stick for my performance?
  • Is it BEST for me?

And here's what He has revealed me to that I hope will be helpful to you.  It's a verse He continually brings back to me during this journey as I continue to see the destructive result of living between the extremes in this area of my life.

In 1 Corinthians 6:12, Paul writes...

“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial.
“Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.

Sister, are you being mastered by tracking your calories and macros? Or are you completely neglecting what you put in your mouth and doing what you think is best? Because both of these responses point to being mastered by something other than your perfect Creator.

  • Is tracking calories and macros permissible? Of course!
  • Is not tracking calories and macros permissible? Of course!
  • Is tracking beneficial? Possibly.  Maybe. I can't answer that for you. That's a question you have to take to the Lord.
  • Are you being mastered by your obsession with tracking your calories and macros?
  • Are you mastered by neglecting what your body needs to perform at it's very best?

So how can you track without becoming a slave to it? The video gives you a great way to do this. I hope you'll try it and let me know how it works for you.

Weight Loss Tip #3: What You Will Gain From Tracking Calories and Macros

Tracking calories and macros is a tool we can use to take care of our bodies, but when we can't live without it for one day, we are abusing it and giving it a place of high honor in our lives.

When we completely disregard it, we are ignoring this valuable tool that can help us become aware of areas where God wants to bring some discipline to our lives.

God wants to use this area of food, eating, tracking, our obsession, and our neglect to transform us from the inside out.

To my obsessed tracker sister, I want you to imagine tracking your pursuit of Godliness with as much focus and intensity as you have tracked your food. Imagine knowing how much you displayed the fruit of the Spirit in a day rather than how many fat, protein, and carbs you ate. It's something to think about, for sure.

To my sister who neglects, I want you to imagine becoming aware of what you are eating and drinking each day and allowing the Lord to use this discipline to impact your ability to love Him and others by exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit each day. It's something to think about for sure.

So what will you gain from tracking? Awareness. Insight. Wisdom. And God can and will use this to transform you from the inside out into the woman He created you to be if you will allow Him to do so!
