The question I hear often when talking about healthy living is "What Should I Eat?" Did you know the #1 Google search at the beginning of 2017 was "healthy living"? Our culture is obsessed with wanting to look and feel good, and we spend billions of dollars a year on potential solutions to do just that.

Today's video introduces a concept that I hope will bring a new perspective to this question, "What should I eat?"

So what did she mean by substance foods versus shadow foods?

How To Eat Healthy: Substance Foods Versus Shadow Foods

What exactly is a food of substance?  Well, the definition of substance is "actual matter of a thing, as opposed to the appearance of or a shadow." Think about that for a minute.....

It's the actual matter of something. A food of substance is actual matter. It's nutrition to maintain life and growth.

At this point I was intrigued to get a better understanding of what constitutes a shadow food.  Merriam Webster defines a shadow as "an imperfect and faint representation or an imitation of something".  Oh wow! A shadow food is an imperfect representation of a food of substance. It's an imitation.

Now as a recovering clean eating Nazi, I love this idea of looking at food in this new way. God has been teaching me that my struggle with my weight, my body, the scale, and comparison really isn't about the food. For years I truly believed it was so I tried every "diet" and program to find the answer. And I found some success, but it always short-lived.

I would go from one ditch to the other...either eating whatever I wanted with little thought to what I was putting in my body or being so rigid that I obsessed over every bite and couldn't enjoy the occassional sweet treat or glass of wine without feeling like I had blown it!

Now I don't know about you, but I quickly found that neither of these ditches were a great place to live!

It wasn't until I began talking to the Lord about this and inviting Him to show me HIS plan for what I should eat that things began to seem less complicated!

You see we serve a God who doesn't live in the ditch of extremes. We serve a God who created each of us individually to bear His image uniquely!

Do you hear that?  You were created to bear His image uniquely! And He has things to tell you about how to eat that are best for YOU!

What Should I Eat?

Oh friend, I beg you to stop asking this question in all the wrong places and to all the wrong people. I spent too many years doing this and when I got an answer, I would follow it to a "T", believing this was the answer!

I beg you to get off the merry go round the multi-billion dollar diet and fitness industry wants you to stay on so they can sell you another "sure-fire solution"!

If you don't take anything else away from this post, please consider this: God created food to give us the nutrition we need to maintain life to do the work He has for us!

He created foods of substance to nourish us and to feed our cells, our organs, our tissues, our muscles, and our bones.

He also allows shadow foods to be available to us. Why? Because He is a loving Father who gives us free choice.

He wants us to live FREE in this area of food and what we should eat! And living FREE means all food (foods of substance and shadowy foods) is permissible, but it might not all be beneficial.  He wants us to take care of this body He's given us, and He wants us to talk to Him about it!  Not Google or our friends or supposed "experts".

Please listen to Him! He created your body and He knows exactly what you need to put into it to accomplish His purpose in and through you!

We spend so much time talking about what to eat when Mark 7:17-19 is clear that this is a "lower" conversation

17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd,
and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.
18 “Don’t you understand either?” he asked.
“Can’t you see that the food you put into your body cannot defile you?

19 Food doesn’t go into your heart, but only passes through the stomach
and then goes into the sewer.”

(By saying this, he declared that every kind of food is acceptable in God’s eyes.)
20 And then he added, “It is what comes from inside that defiles you.
21 For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts,
sexual immorality, theft, murder,
22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit,
lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.

23 
All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.

Friend, God is calling us to something new in our eating and the only way we will learn is to snuggle up with Him and talk to Him about it.

Ask Him to show you the steps He wants you to take
in this area of food.

Ask Him to give you a better understanding of the foods of substance versus the shadowy foods.

Ask Him how your food choice impacts your ability to live out
His purpose for your life!

I know of NO better way to live than this!
