How To Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Weight Loss [Free Download]

In the fall of 2012, I FINALLY lost the weight. I had accomplished what I had been dreaming about and hoping for as long as I could remember. I could wear a size 6 comfortably. I couldn't believe how my legs looked! They were actually small!!! I was so incredibly proud of myself for finding a program I implemented with perfection that delivered the results I had longed for my whole life. People actually asked me if I competed! What??!!!

I knew without a doubt, I had conquered this Mt. Everest in my life and I would never struggle again. I had found the answer. Finally.

I had complete confidence achieving my life-long goal of losing weight would bring true satisfaction. I also believed achieving this goal would eliminate the suffocating grip food had on my life since I had finally won this elusive battle. I had no idea in a few short years, I would be right back where I started.  

In this episode of LiveFREE TV, we'll be talking about the very real issue so many women deal with -  sabotaging our weight loss efforts and results! I'll share more about my story of losing the weight and the subsequent self-sabotage that resulted in me regaining the weight.

Weight Loss Tip #1: How to Identity Self Sabotage

You may be wondering what self-sabotage is exactly.

Merriam Webster defines sabotage like this: "to deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct". 

So if we put the word "self" in front of sabotage, then does that mean that we are deliberately destroying, damaging, or obstructing ourselves if we engage in this behavior?  The answer is "yes".

But why? Why would we deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct ourselves? That seems absolutely crazy, but I'm here to tell you it happens ALL the time. Until we dig deeper into this it will continue to happen over and over again despite our best efforts to change our behavior.

Weight Loss Tip #2: What Causes Self-Sabotage in Weight Loss 

Self-sabotage happens when we have a core belief that interferes or is not in harmony with things we desire or want to accomplish in our lives.

This is known as cognitive dissonance, a disconnect between beliefs or attitudes. When we hold opposing beliefs, the more deeply held belief wins out in the end.

Merriam Webster defines cognitive dissonance as a "psychological conflict resulting from simultaneously held incongruous beliefs and attitudes (as a fondness for smoking and a belief that it is harmful)." 

This psychological conflict, also known as anxiety, must be resolved in order to create congruency in our thoughts. Our mind will work to reduce the importance of one of the conflicting beliefs, and the stronger belief or attitude will win out over the weaker one.

In simple terms, cognitive dissonance is a disconnect between our mind and our heart. They aren't in agreement.

And this is why behavior modification doesn't work.

Our desires, goals, and wants must align with the deeply held beliefs we have about ourselves. If they don't we will eventually let go of the goal or the desire because the tension is too great to continue.

Understanding cognitive dissonance is crucial to understanding what causes self-sabotage in weight loss. If our core belief about who we are doesn't align with our goal to lose weight, get healthy, or liveFREE from scale, we will not be able to sustain the changes we have made. This is exactly what happened to me just like I shared in today's video. This is also why ninety-five percent of dieters will regain their weight within one to five years. Ninety-five percent!

That's a pretty alarming statistics but it's not surprising, is it? It's a perfect set up for the diet and fitness industries to continue to grow year after year with new products, supplements, diets, and fitness programs promising quick results!  If those really worked, if the outside-in approach truly delivered us from the weight, then the statistic for regaining the weight would never be that high.

Sister, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I don't really know if that's the actual definition, but it's the one I'm going with because it does seem absolutely insane that we continue to apply the same solution over and over again hoping this time it will work. And we have a five percent chance it will. Those are atrocious odds. 

Here's the's actually more important for our brain to be right than to achieve the goal or dream we have longed for, no matter how much we believe we want it.

That's why it's time to ditch the diets, and all the other crap (pardon my French) and approach this from an inside-out approach, focusing on changing our beliefs about ourselves and allowing our behavior to change as a direct result of our renewed minds.

Weight Loss Tip #3: How to Stop Self-Sabotaging Your Weight Loss 

In order to stop self-sabotaging our weight loss, we must understand cognitive dissonance is real and is keeping us from living into the freedom and fullness Jesus paid for on the cross.

We must stop "shoulding" on ourselves.

We must stop focusing on the next diet or fitness craze believing this will be the thing that will finally allow us to conquer this mountain.

Instead, we must admit our way doesn't work, it hasn't worked, and it will never work.  We will continue to live stuck in the spin cycle of self-sabotage, and we need God to rescue us and show us His way out of the insanity.

James 1:5-6a in The Message tells us exactly what to do

If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father.
He loves to help.
You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it.
Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. 

To stop self-sabotaging your weight loss, here are four steps you can take to begin changing from the inside-out:

  1. Understand your emotional triggers
  2. Recognize the gap between who you tell yourself you are and who God says you are.
  3. Understand this is cognitive dissonance rooted in pride - believing yourself over God.
  4. Commit to renewing your mind through Biblical meditation.
