How To Stop Hating Your Body and Judging Yourself By The Number On The Scale Or The Size Of Your Jeans

"For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."

In this episode, you'll learn how to STOP hating your body and judging yourself by the number on the scale or the size of your jeans.

If this idea doesn't seem possible, then stick around to learn more.

Growing up, I heard Mark 12:30-31 and never clued into a key part of this commandment..."And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

Did you catch that? "Love your neighbor as yourself."

If you are struggling with hating your body and judging yourself by the number on the scale or the size of your jeans, then are you really loving yourself? I know for many years, (and I still struggle to this day) I didn't love myself how God commanded me to.

In their book, The Missing Commandment LOVE Yourself, Jerry and Denise Basel explore "how loving yourself the way God does can bring healing and freedom to your life."  I think we can feel that it's selfish or even wrong to consider loving ourselves.

And with the explosion of Social Media and "reality" TV in the last ten years, we are bombarded at every turn with messages about our bodies, our looks, how we measure up or how we don't.

In this episode of LiveFREE TV, we'll be talking about the very real issue most women deal with -  judging ourselves by that number on the scale or the number on the tag of our jeans and how to STOP doing this! I'll share a story that happened on a recent walk that God used to remind me of His unending provision in my life. I truly hope it helps you too!

This week I put together a great resource called Start LivingFREE Today.

This is a simple 5 step strategy you can implement today to begin to deal with this insidious mindset in a powerful way because it is grounded in God's truth!

Truth Tip #1: How to Stop Hating Your Body and Judging Yourself

You have to assume you have a target on your back:

You have an enemy whose sole purpose is your destruction. I know that isn't a very happy thought. I get it. But sister, it's the truth!

1 Peter 5:8 reminds us to,

"Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around
like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour."

In Ephesians 6:12 we are told,

"For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies
but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world,
and against evil spirits in the heavenly places."

This enemy is crafty and hates the idea of you or me living free. He will be like that barking dog in the video to keep us on the defensive and living in fear, using whatever means he can to keep us hating our body and judging ourselves by the number on the scale or the size of our jeans. He has a strategy to take us down, and sister, we need one too!

Truth Tip #2: How to Stop Hating Your Body and Judging Yourself

You have to identify the lies you believe:

I've lived many years of my life believing lies about myself and I had no idea I was operating out of "shame-based" identity until I read the book I mentioned above, The Missing Commandment LOVE Yourself. I had believed (and in all honesty, still struggle believing) two insidious lies about myself:

  • Lie #1: My identity is based on what I look like, specifically what the scale says and what size jeans I wear
  • Lie #2: My identity is based on what I do, specifically how well I perform.

I have spent the vast majority of my life believing that I am what I do and what I look like and that only harsh treatment of my body through dieting and exercise as well as beating myself up mentally and condemning myself is what would change me. Maybe you can relate to this.

But recently God has been unwinding these thoughts and beliefs and revealing something deeper...a layer of pride in my heart that I didn't even know was there.

I know in my mind God tells me to "love Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love my neighbor as myself". But am I doing that? I can tell you that I haven't been and He's shown me by believing these lies about myself and operating out of a "shame-based" identity, I'm actually saying, "I know more than you, Lord and my thoughts and beliefs about who I am override yours."

Wow....I had never realized believing and operating out of these lies was rooted in pride...and maybe you haven't either.

Truth Tip #3 How to Stop Hating Your Body and Judging Yourself

You have to know who you are.

In order to move beyond the lies you believe about yourself, it's not enough to know who you aren't. You have to know who you are! And Scripture is full of who we are in Jesus.

Over the past 15 years, I have worked at recognizing the lies I believed about myself and replacing them with the truth. And while I have looked to God's word for these answers, I've also looked to the "self-help" movement through positive thinking and affirmations. These affirmations while seeming to be helpful actually did more harm to me than good, because they were based on my own thoughts and not on the unchanging truth of God's word!

In Ephesians 1:4-7 says,

Even before he made the world, God loved us
and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family
by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.
This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.

So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us
who belong to his dear Son.
He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom
with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.

Do you hear that?

  • You are loved
  • You are chosen
  • You are holy
  • You are without fault
  • You are adopted into God's family through Jesus
  • You belong to Jesus
  • You are forgiven
  • You are FREE

That is the truth of who you are! Can you receive it?

Truth Tip - Conclusion

In the famous love passage of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Paul writes the following words...

Love is patient and kind.
Love is not jealous or boastful or proud
or rude. It does not demand its own way.
It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.

It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out.
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful,
and endures through every circumstance.

So if this passage defines how we are to love, the question arises, do you love yourself in that way?

  • Are you patient, gentle, and kind with yourself?
  • Do you easily let go of your mistakes?
  • Are you irritable and impatient with yourself?
  • Do you keep a record of how you've messed up and/or continue to get it wrong and even "fail"?
  • Have you given up believing you can change?
  • Do you continually doubt, shame, berate or condemn yourself?
  • Do you believe the best about yourself?
