How To Know The PERFECT Diet For You [FREE Download]

Have you ever considered that there is a diet or way of eating that is PERFECT for YOU?

To be honest, up until recently, I've really never considered this. I've been the girl who would either hear of a new diet or would research to find one and if I decided it was sound nutritionally and I believed I could do it, then I jumped in. I would follow the diet to a "T" whether it was Weight Watchers, high protein, cleanse diets, counting calories, South Beach, or Ketogenic. I even contemplated Whole 30 and Paleo but decided they were both too rigid and heavy on prepping the food.

And when I implemented the diet with perfection, I usually lost weight. So, in theory, the diet worked, right?

Well, not really. Of course, my desire was to lose weight but I really wanted to keep it off for good so I would finally feel good about myself and my body. And deep down, I didn't want to be consumed with food anymore. And every diet I ever did came up short in meeting my expectations, longings, and desires.

Did you know the word diet means "food and drink regularly provided or consumed or habitual nourishment."? That's a far cry from what we as a culture mean when we say, "I'm starting a new diet." "What diet are you doing?"  "What kind of results are you getting from your diet?" And on and on and on. 

In this episode of LiveFREE TV, we'll be talking about the very real issue so many women deal with -  the never-ending search for the diet that will work and give us the results we long for permanently so that we look and feel our best.  We'll be exploring how to know the PERFECT diet for you to lose weight and live a healthy life. I'll share more about how I've arrived where I am today in regard to my diet.

Weight Loss Tip #1: The Whole 30 Diet

Whole 30 has become a very popular diet in recent years. Here are some specifics about this diet:

  • It's a 30-day program
  • You eat real food
  • The rules are:
    • NO sugar (real or artificial)
    • NO alcohol
    • NO tobacco
    • NO grains of any kind
    • NO legumes
    • NO dairy
    • NO processed foods

Your only job during the 30 days is to focus on making good food choices.

Weight Loss Tip #2: The Paleo Diet

The Paleo Diet is an extremely popular diet, especially among Cross-Fitters, but it surely isn't only practiced by them. Here are some specifics about this diet:

The food you should NOT eat:

  • Cereal grains
  • Legumes
  • Dairy
  • Refined Sugar
  • Potatoes
  • Processed foods
  • Refined vegetable oils
  • Salt

The food you should eat:

  • Grass-fed meat
  • Fish
  • Fruits & veggies
  • Eggs
  • Nuts & Seeds
  • Healthful Oils

This diet focuses on whole foods and plenty of protein.

Weight Loss Tip #3: The Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic diet has exploded on the scene over the past few months (as of the writing of this blog post).  Here are some of the specifics about this diet:

  • It is a low-carb, high-fat diet
  • Goal is for the body to utilize ketones rather than glucose as it's primary energy source
  • Emphasis is on breakdown of macronutrients: fats, proteins, and carbs
  • Foods that are NOT allowed:
    • Grains
    • Sugar
    • Most fruit
    • Tubers (such as potatoes, carrots, beets)
  • Foods that are allowed:
    • Meat - preferably grass-fed
    • Leafy greens
    • Above ground vegetables
    • High-fat dairy
    • Nuts and seeds
    • Avocados
    • Berries
    • Natural sweeteners
    • Healthy fats such as coconut oil, MCT oil, avocado oil, and extra virgin olive oil to name a few

This diet focuses on whole-foods as well.

Weight Loss Tips: Conclusion

There are pros and cons about each diet I've showcased in this post.

  • They each focus on whole foods - that's a HUGE win in my book.
  • They each abstain from eating sugar which is a REALLY good thing!  I plan to devote an entire blog post to sugar, but until then, all I'm going to say is sugar is a killer and is responsible for much of the current disease in this country.

But there are significant drawbacks of each diet as well:

Whole 30:

There seems like a LOT of NO's, but for some people that wouldn't be a problem. Focus on good food choices...good according to whom? For a girl who is in recovery from an eating disorder stemming from perfectionism and a shame-based identity, this program would be a nightmare.  It reinforces the "diet" mentality of changing things only for a certain amount of time which is not sustainable long-term for most people. It is very time intensive from the planning to the shopping to the cooking. It seems to be the most time-intensive diet out there.

Paleo:

The Paleo diet is pretty restrictive as well and is hard to maintain indefinitely. It also reinforces the diet mentality because most people aren't going to give up all the "shouldn'ts" on this diet for good. Since it has become such a popular way to eat, there have been some convenience foods created to help cut down on the meal prep though it is also not a "grab and go" type of diet.

Ketogenic:

The traditional Ketogenic diet is super restrictive as well. Since the focus is on macros, it is very easy to become obsessed with tracking everything you eat! This is also time intensive in meal planning, shopping, & cooking.
